Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
Deep tissue massages use many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massages, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or "knots"—also known as "adhesions."
When discussing the positive benefits of deep tissue massage, it helps to first understand the techniques used in this type of massage therapy.
Though some of these techniques are basic methods of performing deep tissue work, individual therapists tend to shape and mold them slightly based on their own individual preferences.
